The staff at Heishman Funeral Home Inc. sends condolences to the family of Carolyn Virginia Dickerson Sherman. Carolyn Virginia Dickerson Sherman, 78, of Woodstock, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Consulate Health Care in Woodstock. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. at Antioch Church in Woodstock. Pastor George Bowers will officiate. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. A meal will follow concluding the service. Carolyn was born July 23, 1944, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late James Arthur Dickerson and Ruth Virginia Stepp Dickerson Foley. Although she had a very different upbringing, she was raised in many homes of love. She was given the opportunity to be raised by her aunt Vera Pence whom she called “momma” and Newman Pence whom she called “daddy.” After their death, she had the pleasure of being raised by her Aunt Velma Mowery and Uncle Gaylon Mowery whom she cared for until their deaths. She retired from Rocco (George’s) as a shipping clerk and was also the apartment manager of Valley Vista apartments and Donna apartments in Maryland. She was a member of Antioch Church and the American Legion Auxiliary post 199. She is survived by her three children, Donald I. Sherman Jr. and wife Stephanie of Woodstock, Eddie F. Sherman and wife Glenda of Woodstock and Rhonda Lynn Shelton and husband Frank of Woodstock; sisters, Brenda Lafferty, Kathy Crews, June Bryan, and Donna (Jim) Gehring all of Ohio; sister in law, Dea Foley of Montana; seven grandchildren Stephen Sherman and wife Heather, Whitney Silveira and husband Lucas, Austin Sherman and wife Linnea, Josh Sherman, Nicole Cline and husband Zach, Autumn Shelton and Alivia Shelton; four great grandchildren, Miles Sherman, Felix Sherman, Riley Cline and Rynley Cline. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Irvin Sherman Sr. and her brother, Carl Foley Jr. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Antioch Church Building Fund, 23502 Senedo Road, Woodstock, VA 22664. Carolyn loved to cook and an amazing cook she was! When she made food, she’d always make enough for an army. She also loved being a servant for the Lord in whatever way she was called. Our momma truly had a Servant’s Heart! It was always very important for her to be at Antioch or even support her family at other churches whenever the doors were open, until she became unable. Then she continued supporting by watching online. Carolyn also loved to share her love through hugs. She would always greet everyone with a big smile and a hug, whether she knew you or not. She loved her family more than anything. She called all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, her babies. She made holidays so very special for each of them. It cannot go without being said that she was a caregiver. Her heart was so very big. She cared for all of those that cared for her until they made their way into Glory. She took babies into her home to nurse them to health, so they could be placed back into their homes, or a more suitable place. It broke her heart to let them go, however. Once anyone met Carolyn, you just didn’t forget her. The smile, the hug, the friendship, her genuineness and her love. She loved all of her friends very much, but she had a best friend of 48 years, Nancy Whittington, that she spoke to everyday, and they each helped one another over the loss of the love of their lives. Her family, with saddened hearts, is so very thankful that she finally gets to be with our daddy, after 9 months of his death, but 61 years of marriage, they are reunited with the Lord they loved so very much!
