Dorinda Lilly Shaffer

Dorinda Lilly Shaffer passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012, at home surrounded by her family and friends. Dee was born October 22, 1947, in Beckley, WV, the daughter of the late Daniel Ryan Lilly, Sr., and Louise McKinney Lilly Grinstead. The summer of 1969 was the first of many summers she spent at Camp Strawderman, near Columbia Furnace. It was during this time that she was introduced to her future husband, George. On a snowy West Virginia Saturday afternoon, November 27, 1971, she and Ensign George V. Shaffer were married at St. Mary's United Methodist Church in Beckley. George always reminded Dee that he took her on a three year honeymoon to Naples, Italy, while they were stationed there during his service in the US Navy. In 1975, she and George returned to Woodstock, VA, where they made their home raising two children and many beloved pets, including her big brown dog Lincoln. She is survived by her husband, George V. Shaffer, Woodstock; one son, Matthew S. Shaffer and his wife Julie of Arlington, VA; one daughter, Mary-Margaret S. Kim and her husband Joey, of Midlothian, VA; and granddaughter, Ann-Lilly Caroline Kim (16 months) - the apple of her eye! She attended Woodrow Wilson High School where she played trumpet in the marching band, which performed in several national venues including the 1964 Orange Bowl Parade. In 1970, she graduated from the School of Physical Education at West Virginia University and then taught in Virginia Beach City Schools for 18 months. Her mother Louise M. Grinstead resides in Woodstock and her brother Daniel R. Lilly and his wife Denise live in Virginia Beach. She is also survived by numerous McKinney, Lilly, and Shaffer aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel; and her step-father, W.W. Grinstead. She worked with the family business, Shaffer's BBQ and Catering, in Woodstock, and reserved her summers for Camp Strawderman. For 25 years she was in charge of the tennis program, teaching countless young women the perfect serve and the ideals of Camp Strawderman. She was a member of the Woodstock Presbyterian Church, an avid WVU Mountaineers fan, and for several years enjoyed planning holiday celebrations for the children in the community while serving on the Woodstock Enhancement Committee. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 24, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Woodstock Presbyterian Church or at other times at the family residence. A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Lisa Webb on Wednesday, January 25, at 2:00 p.m. at the Woodstock Presbyterian Church. A time for fellowship and reminiscence will follow in the Shenandoah Room at Shaffer's Store.
