Dr. W. Miller,

Dr. Harold W. Miller, Jr., 83, beloved physician, of Woodstock, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock. Dr. Miller was born on November 8,1927 in Richmond, Virginia, the son of the late Dr. Harold W. Miller, Sr. and the late Susan Brewbaker Miller. He was a retired surgeon with the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and served the community for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joan Parnell Miller of Woodstock, Virginia; daughter, Mary Susan Beck of Richmond, Virginia; son, Ramsey Stephen Miller of Lynchburg, Virginia; step-mother, Betty Bemis Lambert (Jerry) of Woodstock, Virginia; sister, Kimery Miller Shrum (Richard) of Woodstock, Virginia; three brothers, Robert H. Miller (Colleen) of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Richard L. Miller (Suzanne) of Buford, Georgia, and Gerald M. Miller (Christine) of Chesterfield, Virginia; three grandchildren, Steven, Ginny, and Jeffrey Beck; seven nieces; and eleven nephews. Dr. Miller attended Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Following graduation, he attended the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond where he received his medical degree in surgery. He then completed his internship in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Miller was a captain in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and served in a military hospital as a surgeon. Following his military service, he returned to Woodstock where he practiced medicine. For many years he was privileged to work side by side with his father, Dr. Harold W. Miller, Sr., a wonderful father/son combination who tirelessly served the medical needs of the Woodstock community and the surrounding areas. The legacy of Dr. Miller, Sr. and Jr. and their excellent medical service continues on by family members who have either served or continue to serve in the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital as nurses. These family caretakers, dating back to 1951, consist of Betty Bemis Miller, Joan Parnell Miller, Kimery Miller Shrum, and Jenna Shrum Robinson. Dr. Miller was active in various community activities. He belonged to the Rotary Club and served on the School Board and several times he was Chief of Staff at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. In addition, he served in various other capacities at the hospital. He was a Trustee and teacher of the men's Sunday school class at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Dr. Miller loved to fish, hunt and spent time with his brothers playing golf and fishing during the summer months. There will be a private burial service with only family members at the grave site followed by a celebration of Dr. Miller's life at St. Paul's United Church of Christ on July 18, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. Services will be conducted by the Reverend Barbara Rhodes and Dr. Robert S. Miller. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Woodstock Miller Scholarship Fund or the Kitchen Fund at St. Paul's UCC or the charity of your choice.
