Joy Painter

The staff at Heishman Funeral Home Inc. sends condolences to the family of Joy Painter. Joy Painter, 92, of Toms Brook, Virginia, passed away on April 8, 2024. She was born in Shenandoah County on March 29, 1932. She was one of six children by Clarence and Ruth (Ridings) Crabill. Joy grew up in Toms Brook. She resided and flourished in this small town throughout her life. The town and community of Toms Brook sustained her family with its gardens, farms, schools, churches, friends, families and neighbors. She loved and married her neighbor and school bus driver, Dick Painter on March 15, 1950. She chauffeured her “kids” (and others) to church, Luther League, choir practice, school activities, swimming lessons, Little League Baseball, PTA meetings, and Girl Scout meetings. Joy was a proud employee of Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for 28 years as a Unit Secretary on Surgical Floor, then the Med/Surg unit. She developed close relationships with her fellow employees. Those bonds provided her with a second family and remained so throughout her life and for this she was truly blessed. Joy’s adventures placed her over most of the east coast; Outer Banks became a premier, desirable and much visited destination with family and a special group of beach friends, Maine just to eat a lot of seafood and lobster, the island of Barbados with her nephew Phil (Pat) and sister Helen, Florida and the Florida Keys, and always when possible, visits to Little Rock, Arkansas to visit her brother Donald and Enon, Ohio to visit her sister, Dolly. Joy fiercely loved her family. She reveled in their successes and accomplishments. She was honored and very proud to have “Joy” used as a middle name for her great granddaughter. Joy is survived by her son, Dan (Hilda) Painter; daughter, Sandy (Cregg) Coffelt; daughter-in-law, Sharon McDonald; sister, Dolly Holler; grandchildren, Jon (Michelle) Coffelt, Jackie Painter, Camela Coffelt, Justin Painter; great grandchildren, Harley (Sydney) Stinson, Noah Brinker, Conner Marston, Jana Nance, and Amantha Joy Coffelt; great great granddaughter, Parker Rose Stinson; and special nephews, Bobby (Roberta) Peer and Phil (Pat) Peer. She is preceded in death by her husband, R.F. “Dick” Painter; son, Bill Painter; daughter, Carolyn Ann Painter; brothers, Jack, Calvin, and Donald Crabill; sister, Helen Peer; and best friend, Maxine Crabill. The family of Joy Painter express their gratitude to the members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Stewards of Saumsville Christian Church and to mother’s caregivers, Roberta Hawg, Claudia Brill, and the ever faithful, Inez Brown. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 2:00pm at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Toms Brook officiated by Reverend Robert Wise. Burial will be private with family in attendance.
