Lillie J. Fleming (Eagles)

The staff at Heishman Funeral Home Inc. sends condolences to the family of Lillie J. Fleming (Eagles). Lillie J Fleming (Eagles) of Mount Jackson, VA passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 14, 2024. She lasted 12 months and 21 days after her husband, Beverley Fleming, left us. Her children think Mom and Dad planned a sweetheart date for Valentine’s Day. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 2:00PM, visitation starting at 1PM, at Valley Funeral Service in Edinburg, VA. Pastor Chad Estep will officiate. Lillie was born in 1938 in Alexandria, LA and graduated from Leesville High School in 1956. She was the Miss West Louisiana Forestry Queen of 1954. In the 1960s, Lillie moved with her family to Arlington, VA and met her future husband (Beverley Fleming) while working at the Pentagon. When asked about it, she’d smile and say the Pentagon was a good place to find a spouse. She said she was fired from one of her first jobs wrapping Christmas presents at a department store, in her later life she was a huge fan of gift bags. In the 1960s she worked as a secretary at the Pentagon, in the 1970s she owned a fabric store in Woodstock, VA, was a budget analyst and then worked with computers for the Army, later she worked for Northwestern Community Services, at James Madison University for the Dean of the College of Business, and finally she set up the financial system for the Northern Virginia Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission in Front Royal, VA. After her ‘retirement’ she used her computer and finance skills in service to her community, tracking donations for the Ruritan’s Christmas Toy Empty Stocking Fund and during the fund drive for the construction of the Edinburg, VA Library building, and as the treasurer for Walker’s Chapel Church of the Brethren. She was also on the Shenandoah County Social Services Board and Northwestern Community Services Board. She loved to quilt and was a wonderful artist. Many of her pencil portrait drawings, colored pencil still life pictures, and paintings won prizes at the Shenandoah County Fair. One of her favorite things to do was to draw the people sitting near her during meetings or at restaurants. She surprised many unsuspecting models with the gift of their portrait drawn on napkins or paper tablecloths. She is survived by her children Earl Pridgen and Melanie Miller (James), sister Jean Buchholz (Ed), brother-in-law Dudley Fleming (Karen), grandchildren Leah McDaniel, Tory and Logan Pridgen, Alexander Pridgen, and great grandchildren Corbin and Toby Harris. She is predeceased by her husband Beverley H. Fleming, parents, Earl L. and Inez (Goodwin) Eagles, and son Grant Webb. Mom and Dad, Lillie and Beverley were a tight team and often talked about as if they were one. Neither was more important than the other and they always helped each other reach their aspirations and goals.
