Valorie B. Chaves Hockman

The staff of Heishman Funeral Home/Heishman Funeral Service sends condolences to the family of Mrs. Valorie Hockman. Valorie B Chaves Hockman, 78, of Strasburg, VA went home to be with our Lord on February 18, 2025. Valorie was born on June 30,1946 in Washington, DC to Helen V. Espina Chaves (DeLeon) and Miguel Badilla Chaves. She grew up in Maryland and graduated in 1964 from Central High School in Seat Pleasant, MD. She married the love of her life, James Randolph (Randy) Hockman on August 11, 1973. Valorie is survived by her husband, Randy of Strasburg, VA. She is also survived by her four children; son Craig Smith and wife Alberta of Edinburg, VA; son Keith Smith and wife Cathy of Edinburg, VA; daughter Alisha Williams and husband Trent of Woodstock, VA; and son Jason Hockman and wife Emi of Yokosuka, Japan. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, Tiffany Smith, Grant Smith, Desiree Buskirk (husband Jordan), Luke Smith, Anna Durren (husband Jacob), TJ Williams, Maxuel Hockman, and Carina Hockman, and one great grandson, Sullivan Alexander Buskirk. She is also survived by her siblings, Angela (Anne) Bice of Mechanicsville, MD; Gloria Jean (Jeanie) Edwards and husband Jay of Viera, FL; Jose S. DeLeon Jr and wife Phyllis of Virginia Beach, VA; Anita DeLeon Georgia of Titusville, FL; Marie Browning and husband Chris of Glen Allen, VA; John DeLeon of Titusville, FL; Marcellina (Marcy) King and husband Don of Fredericksburg, VA; and sister-in-law Carolyn Miller and husband Rick of Gainesville, FL. Also surviving are many, many nieces, nephews and cousins and her Aunt Anita Taylor. She was preceded in death by her father, Miguel Chaves; mother, Helen V. DeLeon; stepfather, Jose S. DeLeon Sr.; and sister, Adriana (Dee) DeLeon. During her lifetime, Valorie worked in several different professions. In the 1970’s, she worked for Peoples Life Insurance Company. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, she was a sales manager for Shenandoah Vineyards, a bailiff for the Shenandoah County Jail, and part of the production crew at One Stop Deli. She was the caregiver for her aunt, Margaret Funkhouser, providing loving care through the end of her life. Valorie enjoyed photography, writing poetry, crocheting, and spending time in her flower gardens. She was known for her outgoing and magnetic personality – she never met a stranger. Her true passion was helping to raise and babysit her grandkids (known as Mimi to them). She took great care journaling about the time spent with her grandchildren and left them the precious gift of her written memories. A devoted Christian and a member of the Liberty Baptist Church, Valorie read her bible daily. Valorie dealt with numerous health issues over the last twenty years of her life; however, she never let those issues affect her zest for living and loving. Her faith in the Lord never wavered. She leaves a void in the lives of those who loved her. At her request, there will be no service. The family is grateful to all who helped care for her, especially Kerri Armentrout, whom Valorie loved. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shenandoah Co.
