Richard John (Dick) Murray, 85, passed away peacefully while residing at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal, VA on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, after a short and unexpected illness. Richard was born on June 23, 1936, in Roselle Park, NJ; son of Byron F. Murray and Helen Repp Murray. While living only a few blocks away from his future wife, Nancy Helen Newkirk, they did not meet until he was serving in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. They married in 1959 and celebrated 43 years of marriage before Nancy’s death in 2001. After traveling through the Shenandoah Valley, in 1972, Richard and Nancy relocated the family from Old Bridge, NJ to a farm on South Ox Road in Edinburg, VA. Richard became well-known as a heating and air conditioning contractor. His company was named Val-Air Conditioning. He assisted in the renovation of the Edinburg Mill when it was converted into a restaurant and then again when it became a museum. Richard’s hobbies were diverse from drag racing stock cars at the Englishtown Raceway, competing in NRA’s competitive shooting divisions, and breeding and raising horses. Richard was a founding member of the International Morab Breeders Association. Along with his wife, he helped start the Shenandoah County 4-H Horse and Pony Club. Lastly, he supported his children’s livestock interests with day-to day care of animals and hauling horses, cattle, hogs, and chickens to local and state competitions. Richard is survived by his children, Kurt Murray and wife Winona of Saumsville, VA, John Murray of Thurmont, MD, Lynne Murray and husband Wes Hogue of Edinburg, VA, and Paul Murray and wife Rebecca of Edinburg, VA. He is survived by his grandchildren, Bridget Murray Byrd and Samuel Murray and great-grand daughter, Ruth Murray. He is survived by his sister, Sylbie Yon of Eatonton, GA and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022, at Portering the Glory International in Edinburg, VA, with a reception following. Dr. Rebecca Murray will officiate.
