The staff at Heishman Funeral Home Inc. send condolences to the family of Roger Allan Bolland. Roger Allan Bolland, 78, passed away at home on August 21, 2021, from complications due to cancer. Roger resided in Woodstock, Virginia for the past 16 years. Prior to moving to the Shenandoah Valley, he was a resident of Woodbridge (Dale City), Virginia for 32 years. Roger was born on January 15, 1943 in East Liverpool, Ohio to Wayne E. Bolland and Dorothy M. Greene. Roger was a 1961 graduate of Lincoln High School (Midland), earned a B.S. of Education from Indiana State College (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) in 1965, and a Master of Education from George Mason University in 1980. Roger taught at Central High School, Prince Georges County, MD from 1966 to 1971; at Groveton High School, Fairfax County, Virginia from 1971 to 1985; and at West Potomac High School, Fairfax County, Virginia from 1985 to 1998. Retiring after 32 years of teaching chemistry and various other sciences in public schools and serving many years as science department chair, Roger taught an additional seven years of chemistry and physics at St. Stephens St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia, finally retiring to the Shenandoah Valley in 2005. Early in his career at Central HS and Groveton HS, Roger coached the cross country and winter track teams and assisted with the spring track teams. At St. Stephens St. Agnes School, Roger put his carpentry skills to work engineering stage sets for the drama productions. Roger also served as starter for many of the SSSAS outdoor track meets. From 1986 to 1996, Roger was very active with the Northern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association, serving as President 1991-1993, and serving as course master for the Sandy Run Regional Park Rowing Racecourse for much of that time. He was also very involved with the Prince William Crew Association and in the construction of Oxford House. In retirement, Roger took great pleasure in walking down the hill behind his house and wade-fishing in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River for smallmouth bass and sunfish nearly every warm evening after supper. Roger was also the lead water quality monitor for the Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River for several years. Since 2007, Roger has been a member of the Woodstock Lions Club, and he was very actively involved in the annual vision and hearing screening of the public and private school students of Shenandoah County by the Shenandoah County Lions Clubs. In the Spring of 2020, Roger was honored by the Woodstock Lions by being named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor in Lionism. Roger is survived by his wife of 52 years, Deborah L. Bolland; son Kurt Bolland and daughter-in-law Chandra; son John Bolland and daughter-in-law Christina; and grandchildren Devin Bolland, Paige Bolland, and Nadia Binford. Roger is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Laura Francis (Steve) and Linda Godfrey (Mack). Roger is survived by six nieces and nephews: Jeff Bolland (Lisa), Cathie Bolland (Scott Shearer), Rob Francis (Alexandra), Ron Watkins (Kerri), Mike Watkins (Courtney), Kate Austin (Scott); nine great nieces and nephews: Ryan Bolland (Cassie), Haley Bolland (Sam Beckey), Kyle Bolland, Jack Watkins, Elsa Watkins, Andy Watkins, Grayson Watkins, Alex Watkins, Abby Scott; and one great-great nephew: Carson Bolland. Roger was predeceased by his parents Wayne and Dorothy Bolland, in-laws Robert and Patricia Bladt, brother Ron and sister-in-law Norma Bolland, and sister-in-law Julia Watkins. Roger requested that no formal service be held; however, an invitation to a Celebration of Life for family and friends will be forthcoming at a date to be determined.
