Anna Mae Hottle Smoot

The staff of Heishman Funeral Home/Valley Funeral Service sends condolences to the family of Anna Mae Hottle Smoot. Mrs. Anna Mae Hottle Smoot, age 96, of Edinburg, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Skyline Terrace. She was born on April 8, 1928, in Mt. Jackson, Virginia, the daughter of the late Elmer Ray and Perlie Mae Heishman Hottle. Anna Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 49 years, Norman Smoot; and three brothers, Herman Hottle, Richard Hottle, Carroll Hottle and one sister, Betty Hottle Dellinger. Anna Mae loved her family. She is survived by three sons, Orville Smoot (Judy) of Edinburg, Virginia; Ron Smoot (Jackie) of Shenandoah, Virginia; and Larry Smoot (Judith) of Maurertown, Virginia. Anna Mae adored her four grandchildren: Rebecca Smoot, Russell Smoot (Lindsey), Patrick Smoot (Kate) and Kaitlin Smoot. She leaves behind seven great grandchildren, Alyssa Burner, Josh Reynolds, Everett Smoot, Wrenn Smoot, Paxton Smoot, Casen Smoot, and Ivy Smoot. Surviving also are two sisters, Helen Hottle Will of Nokesville, Virginia; Maxine Hottle Wilt of Timberville, Virginia and special sisters-in-law, Julia Smoot Lutz of Winchester, Virginia, Arlene Smoot Barb of Edinburg, Virginia and Dorothy Showman Hottle of Timberville, Virginia. She had many nieces and nephews that she loved. Anna Mae was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Jerome, where she played an active role of service to the Lord and her church family. She had a love for music, singing in the choir for many years and participating in the annual Christmas Programs. Anna Mae was an active member of the church’s sewing circle, meeting weekly to socialize and make beautiful rugs to sell. She served as this organization’s treasurer for many years. Beyond her church activities, Anna Mae sang with The Community Gospel Singers, traveling to churches throughout the area to share their love of music. Anna Mae loved to help others. She was involved in buying food and gifts and assembling “shut-in” boxes for those in need. She volunteered at the VFW many Saturdays, wrapping chicken and helping prepare dinners. Anna Mae was a member of the Columbia Furnace Community Club, where she participated in making apple butter, serving community meals, and enjoying time spent with fellow members. Anna Mae was also a dedicated worker at the Conicville Fire Department’s summer carnival. Anna Mae had many talents. She was a tremendous housekeeper and took great pride in her home and yard. She was an excellent cook, baker and seamstress. Above all, Anna Mae was a bus driver for Shenandoah County Schools for thirty plus years, earning the respect of students and colleagues alike. Anna Mae was a shining light in the lives of all who knew her. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of family and friends. To her grandchildren, Anna Mae was an incredible and loving “Memaw”. They will have fond memories of her fun and upbeat attitude, her infectious smile, and contagious laugh. Anna Mae attended all of their athletic events, school performances, graduations, and college commencements. She especially looked forward to the holidays, hosting big breakfasts and making delicious dinners for the entire family. The grandkids especially loved Thanksgiving at Memaw’s, where they expressed their gratitudes. The family wishes to thank the administration, staff, and nurses of Skyline Terrace for the excellent care given to Anna Mae for the past four years. Burial will be Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. for family and friends at Sunset View Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church-Jerome, located at 4109 Jerome Road, Edinburg, VA. 22824. Rev. Katie Gosswein and Rev. Sonya Williams-Giersch will officiate. Honorary Pallbearers: Alfred Heishman, Jr., Richard Heishman, Charles Heishman, Wayne Smoot, Dean Barb, Kirby Dellinger, Jr., Steve Will, and Dwight Hottle.
