The staff at Heishman Funeral Home, Inc. send condolences to the family of Burgess Elwood Dellinger. Burgess Elwood Dellinger, 96, of Woodstock, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026. Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at 1PM on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at St. Jacob Lutheran Church, 15226 Senedo Road, Edinburg, with Pastor Katie Gosswein officiating. Family and friends are also invited to attend the Celebration of Life and meal at the Conicville Fire Department, 763 Conicville Road, Mt Jackson following the service. Burial will be held Tuesday August 4, 2026, at 11 am at Sunset View Memorial Gardens. Military Honors by Woodstock American Legion Post 199. Friends may sign the register book at Valley Funeral Service, Bowmans Crossing, Friday July 31, 2026, from 9am-5pm. Burgess was born on February 4, 1930, to Russell F. and Daisy Dellinger. One of six children, he grew up on the family farm in Ridge Hollow and graduated from Edinburg High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served in an artillery unit in Anchorage, Alaska. During his time in Alaska, he married the love of his life, Dickie Barr in a military wedding on January 5, 1954. The couple later returned to Edinburg and the family farm. Burgess built their first family home on Fairground Road and later built the Patmos Road home where they raised their two children. Burgess began his construction career as a Permastone mason; much of the Permastone work seen throughout Shenandoah and the surrounding counties was likely completed by him. He later became a building contractor and established Burgess E. Dellinger Incorporated with his wife, Dickie. Together, they also founded Dellinger Building Supply. Burgess went on to develop and build subdivisions, often naming streets in honor of family members. Burgess was an active member of Rotary and received the Paul Harris Fellow recognition. He served as president of the Woodstock Rotary, was a member of the Shenandoah County Homebuilders Association, Woodstock Moose, American Legion, and was a lifelong member of St. Jacob Lutheran Church in Edinburg. Burgess was known for both his strong work ethic and his zest for life. He enjoyed dancing, music, horseback riding, bicycling, amusement parks, water skiing, and snow skiing well into his late seventies. He also treasured traveling across the country with family and friends, including memorable snowmobile trips that led to many cherished stories of adventure. Burgess was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Dickie Barr Dellinger; his daughter-in-law, Ruth “Susy” Dellinger; his grandson, Roland Lindhurst; and his special friend, Wanda Sager. He was also preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: Warren Dellinger (Reba), Anna Tuttle (Harold), Evelyn Market (Raymond), Dewey Dellinger (Katherine), and Milton Dellinger. Burgess is survived by his son, Wade Burgess Dellinger (Lisa); his daughter, Dawn Dellinger Lindhurst; his grandchildren, Rayna Cooper (Jason), Betty Dellinger (Kevin), and Devin Lindhurst (Juliana); seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Burgess deeply loved his family and took special joy in his grandchildren and great-grandson. His nieces and nephews affectionately knew him as “Uncle Bud.” Known to family and friends as Bud, he will be remembered for his warm smile, kindness, and faith. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Warren in Woodstock for the loving and compassionate care they provided for Burgess. They are also grateful to the residents who befriended him and helped make his final years full of joy and meaning. Pallbearers will be Devin Lindhurst, Jason Cooper, Kevin Miller, Joseph Lambert, Josiah Joseph, Kollin Jenkins, Travis Pence and Jared Pence In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Woodstock Volunteer Rescue Squad, Woodstock Volunteer Fire Department, or St Jacob Lutheran Church.
