James Curran

James Robert (Jim) Curran, 77, of Mt. Jackson, Virginia passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at his home near Hudson's Crossroads. Jim was born in Rochester, Minnesota, November 3, 1937, son of Bartley W. and Grace Morgan Curran, nee Jones, (both deceased). A graduate of Eyota, Minnesota high school, he was a Golden gloves boxer, 50's Rock and Roll drummer and a stock car race driver during his teen years. Jim joined the US Air force upon graduation and throughout his military service, attended college classes, earning many credits in American history and language studies. He loved American History and was quick to share deep background, little known facts, including very interesting trivia, about the WWII and Vietnam War eras.. He had a remarkable aptitude for languages, ultimately becoming very proficient in 5 languages including Russian. Upon leaving the Air force he became a member of the Central Intelligence Agency with a career spanning more than 40 years. Jim was united in marriage on July 13, 1957 to Suzanne B Dunkle at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Newberry, Michigan. Jim and ""Sue"" would tell you that they have had a very fulfilling life and that their postings around the world had taught them that there was no place like the United States. Their marriage was a blend of his quiet, behind the scenes, demeanor and her public love of people. He would guide and assist his wife in her growing commitment to restoring America to the stature where the USA was the ""the shining city on a hill"". Both hoping that their Grandchildren and future generations would once again have the patriotic love and pride of country for which he worked an entire lifetime.. As a veteran who experienced war duty in Vietnam Jim was deeply worried about the direction of his beloved country. He helped his wife write, and edited, most of her published letters, essays, and public speeches as an outlet for his experience, expertise and knowledge of that period. Survivors are his wife Suzanne, ""Sue""; son, Matthew James of Scottsdale, AZ.; Grandchildren, Tyler James, attending University of Arizona in Tucson; Riley Elizabeth and great grandson, Miles James, of Charlottesville, VA; also including many nieces and nephews living throughout the United States. Funeral services, arranged by the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mt. Jackson, VA,. will take place Monday, November 17th. The family will receive friends from 9:15 AM to 9:55 AM preceding the funeral service at 10:00 AM at Dellinger's Mt. Jackson location on Main Street (Rte. 11). Interment, with honors, will be at the new section of the Culpeper National Cemetery, 501 East Chandler St., Culpeper, VA. at 2:00 PM, line up begins at 1:30 PM. Both services are open to friends and family.
